Crowhead

Biography

Born in Salford in 1975, Christian Wood – aka Crowhead – caught the dance bug at age 15. His first real musical love affair was with break hardcore and rave anthems and he soon began collecting flyers, travelling to warehouse parties, buying records at Spin Inn and Eastern Bloc and listening to Sunset 106 and Stu Allen on Key103.

At 19, a friend passed him a copy of Ultimate Breaks and Beats Vol. 9 and that was that, breaks were the new vice, and he set about rabidly collecting rare funk, soul, rock and disco records along with any other vinyl obscurities he could find.

Before long he connected with Fat City Records and started promoting their club night ‘Counter Culture’, which eventually became the now legendary (and still going strong) ‘Friends and Family’. In 2003 he signed a deal with Grand Central Records, released two EP’s as ‘The Nudge’ and began DJ’ing full time, playing around all over the UK and Europe. He’s still a vinyl addict, but, as he poetically put’s it, he’s “not a fuckin’ nerd with it. Records are to be played with!”

In 2008 Crowhead signed to ATIC Records and set about creating his debut LP, ‘Born With Teeth’. Hatched in ‘The Nest’, his top floor recording studio set in Manchester’s rainy Northern Quarter, the album is bass heavy and laced with vintage synths and dope samples. Along with Crowhead’s own dulcet tones, this future classic features guest vocals from regular partner in rhyme MC Kwasi, Mikey D.O.N. (of Krispy 3 fame), Milwaukee’s Rusty P’s, and label mate Niko.

‘Best Kept Secret EP’, ‘The Bends EP’ and ‘Born With Teeth’ are all out now
